Update: Car strikes child on Boykin Road

A 2-year-old boy was hit by a car on Boykin Road at 9 p.m. Sunday after running into the road, according to an incident report.

The child and his family were in their front yard at the 2400 block of Boykin Road playing football at the time of the accident. The driver of the vehicle, 32-year-old Tuowanda Staten, said she tried to avoid the child when he ran into the road, but was unsuccessful and struck the boy with her car, Lt. Scott Gay said.

After pulling over her car, the child's father, 24-year-old James Wright, and other family members attacked the driver, Gay said.

Staten told officers Wright said, "You just killed my baby. I'm going to kill you."

The father then punched Staten in the face and kicked her several times while she was lying in the road. Staten said the assault didn't end until Wright was pulled off of her by others.

Staten was transported to Doctors Hospital with cuts on her face and body, broken finger nails and complaints of loose teeth, according to an incident report.
