Dump truck kills Liberty County worker

HINESVILLE, Ga. -- A Liberty County employee was killed by a dump truck Tuesday, according to Hinesville police.

Eric Ray Leach, 47, of Hinesville died at the scene from injuries suffered when the truck hauling a load of dirt at a construction site drove over him, said traffic investigator Mike Mooney. It was not clear how Leach ended up under the truck, Mooney added.

"The driver of the truck didn't even know he had run over Leach," Mooney said. The driver was identified as Patrick Ervay, 28, of Ludowici.

The site -- at the intersection of Fraser Drive and West Oglethorpe Highway -- was occupied by a hospital until it was torn down several years ago. It will be the future home of the county's Department of Family and Children's Services, according to Liberty County Administrator Joey Brown.

He said Leach had been a county employee since October 2009.

"Eric was a great worker and friend to all of us," Brown said. "... I hope that the community will join us as we pray for the family and for those employees involved in this tragic event."
