Public service an honor, Gates tells grads

ATLANTA - Defense Secretary Robert Gates told the graduating class of Morehouse College in Atlanta that a lot is said about the rights of citizens, but not enough about the responsibilities.

Gates said Americans also hear a lot about the problems of public service, but not enough about the rewards. He said he entered government service 44 years ago and continues to consider it a great honor.

Gates said some in public service may appear tough or jaded on the outside, but in their heart of hearts they are romantics, idealists and optimists.

After the graduation ceremony today, the defense secretary presided at the commissioning of seven graduates into the Navy and Air Force.
