DUBLIN, Ga. - Two gospel singers are facing multiple counts of burglary and theft after authorities say the pair played uplifting music for several Middle Georgia churches, then robbed them of some $100,000 worth of speakers, microphones and other musical equipment.

Washington County Sheriff Thomas H. Smith said Tuesday that 28-year-old Deshawn Rico Thomas, of Augusta, and 28-year-old Rico Pionegro Blackshear, from Dublin, have each been charged with nine counts of theft by taking and nine counts of burglary.

Smith says authorities had been investigating a string of nine break-ins at churches across the county over the past several months. He says a tipster told authorities the pair might be linked to the break-ins last week and authorities executing a search warrant found musical equipment in the mens' homes and cars.

You see ..people like this

You see ..people like this that use God as their cover up thru life to mask the REAL person that they are makes me cringe! Yet I see it all the time ...would love to be a fly on the wall on their judgement day ...its a shame that behind bars they will still be singing their gospel songs like they didn't do anything wrong ......Go figure ....

Musicians arrested in church

Musicians arrested in church break-ins in midstate
By LIZ FABIAN - lfabian@macon.com Sign up for daily e-mail news alerts

Two gospel musicians are accused of playing at churches then preying on them in more than 25 break-ins in nearly a dozen counties across eastern Middle Georgia.

More than $100,000 worth of music equipment and electronics has been recovered in the joint investigation of the sheriff’s offices in Laurens, Johnson and Washington counties.

Drummer and guitar player Rico Blackshear, 28, of Dublin, and keyboard player DeShawn Thomas, 28, of Sandersville, were arrested Wednesday. Since that time, authorities have been able to link the pair to at least two dozen incidents beginning last November.

“It was an investigation that was done by the three agencies combined, and they took information they received and kept piecing it together and working it,” said Laurens County sheriff’s Capt. Stan Wright.

Investigators said they are continuing to track down and recover stolen items in the case that reaches into Dodge, Bleckley, Pulaski, Twiggs, Glascock, Treutlen, possibly Jefferson and three other counties.

“We moved six pickup loads, I think, from three locations in the Dublin area and also some from Washington County that day,” Wright said.

“We look to uncover some more property, and the investigation is continuing and there’s a possibility of more arrests.”

Laurens County investigator Steve Howard said in most instances, Blackshear and Thomas performed with gospel bands at the churches where thefts occurred. The names of the groups were not disclosed because the suspects substituted for other musicians in legitimate groups, and Howard did not want to sully the reputation of innocent band members.

Wright said the musicians would go back later, pry their way into the churches and pilfer sound boards, microphones, stands and musical instruments. He knows of five churches hit in Laurens County alone.

“That’s pretty low, isn’t it?” he said.

Many of the items already had been pawned or swapped for other equipment, Howard said.

Washington County Sheriff Thomas Smith said five churches were burglarized in his county in February and four more in April.

The Union Hill Baptist Church in Sandersville was hit twice in one week as the thieves apparently had to return with more help to load up the speakers.

“It was awful the way they did it,” Smith said.

“We’ve been working on it every day, and one of my investigators got a tip.”

To answer your question,

To answer your question, Shelf, it really doesn't. But to a bunch of people who post here it seems to. Evil is evil. Crime is crime. Justice should be colorblind. Excuses for criminals should be colorblind. Actually, there should be no excuses.

And my brother wonders why I

And my brother wonders why I don't attend any churches...it's because they are full of liars, cheats, thieves and the like...why I can go to Harrisburg if I wanna hang out w this type of low life creature..God forgives, but I'm a little slower about that...sing praises and then watch my smoke and dust as I wheel outta town w the goods...laughable and sad...another perfect example of why I keep saying Jesus is already on His way back...any day now...

Zeno, if no one lied, cheated

Zeno, if no one lied, cheated or stole, there'd be no reason to go to church. It's a place to meet and try to improve ones life. It provides an atmosphere of trying to make things better where you're surrounded by many others trying to make things better. There's plenty of meeting places for the perfect people, but no one goes to those.

Corgi, thanks for the picture link. I guess Deshawn and Pionegro weren't good ole boys after all. That's probably why my post was removed. Too racist.

Cliff, I agree with your

Cliff, I agree with your 6:06am post. Most people use the excuse that there are hyprocrites, liars, cheaters, etc. for not attending church to justify not going. There are no perfect people, and attending church is suppose to be about worshiping God, not finding fault with each other. If more would attend church and pray for the ones who have fallen into these sins, just maybe we would have less hyprocrites, liars, and cheaters.

InChristLove - Thanks for

InChristLove - Thanks for bringing reasonable perspective to the church issue. It is about worshiping God and growing closer to Him, not about 'who does what'. We would do well to remember to take the log out of our own eye before we try to remove splinters from others, and that goes for the ones as well who sit back and make excuses for not being in church because of 'other people'.

Thanks, Corgimom, for your link. The Macon paper said Thomas stays in Sandersville, but the Augusta paper says Augusta. Sounds like Thomas is just perfect for running for political office here.

I have a question for

I have a question for ZenoElia.....do you stop going to the doctor simply because there are doctors who are crooks? The logic you use for not being in church doesn't hold water. If a friend does you wrong, do you cease relationships with all of your friends? Yes, the church is full of hypocrites, liars, thieves....they are called SINNERS. What better place for ALL SINNERS to be?!?!?!

Problem is, there is some

Problem is, there is some truth in what Baron says. Man-made, organized religion is often far from the plain, simple truth of the Gospel. That truth can be abused by people for power or position.

Ironic thing is that Jesus Christ never had any money or power, yet changed more lives than any world leaders, politicians, or powerbrokers in history. That's why you go to church: to worship Christ.

Sure, there are sinners in every church. Church is teeming with sinners just like me and you. Don't you expect to find sick folks in a hospital? But, if a sick sinner is keeping you from worshiping God in church (as God instructs us to do), then actually that sinner is closer to God than you are.

Well Praise God "the church"

Well Praise God "the church" is not an organization or a building you go to...it's the body of Christ...which is spread all over the world...many parts, different functions...cause that's just how awesome He is!
