Mock disaster drill Thursday at airport

Area hospitals will participate in a mock disaster response sponsored in part by Fort Gordon at the Augusta Regional Airport on Thursday.


The exercise will be to determine the medical community's response to a large-scale disaster, according to a press release.

Fort Gordon and the National Disaster Medical System are co-sponsoring the exercise, which will include more than 300 personnel from the different agencies involved.

The scenario involves a fake earthquake near the "New Madrid" fault area of Missouri. Mock patients from the area are coming to Augusta and local agencies must prepare to receive them, the release said.

Hospitals and agencies involved in the exercise include: Charlie Norwood Veterans Hospital, Trinity Hospital, Doctors Hospital, University Hospital, Medical College of Georgia, East Central Georgia Regional Hospital, Richmond County Health Department, Richmond County Emergency Management Agency, Augusta Regional, Medical Reserve Corp, Sheppard Community Blood Center, the Augusta Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army of Augusta.
