ATLANTA - Hit a bear in Georgia and you can take it home under a bill passed Thursday by the Legislature.

The bill, which is headed to the governor for his signature, clarifies that people who run over and kill bears or deer to keep the animals instead of turning them over to the state Department of Natural Resources. Sen. Don Thomas, R-Dalton, sponsored the bill after two bears were accidentally killed in his district.

While people will not have to notify DNR officials if they hit a deer, they will have to give notice within 48 hours if they hit a bear.

The Department of Natural Resources has typically mounted the bears and put them in museums, but Thomas says the agency does not need any more.

Who thought this was a good
Unpublished

Who thought this was a good idea? What about "small government" or "tell gov't to get out our way" or "gov't wants to control everything" or "this is socialism" or "gov't intrusion" or any of the other untruths heard daily? And let a brotha get caught with a dead bear...no one will have heard of this law, then there is probably some fine line about the specific kind of bear which the brotha just happened to kill. He would end up being charged with something because who determines exactly what an "accident" is? In the brotha's case it will not be ruled an accident and he will be charged. Oh, and the law is an embrassment to the state.

Yeah, my car is made out of fiberglass. Keeping a bear is the LEAST of my worries if I hit one. I guess the bear can keep me if that happens.
