An 18-year-old Westside High School student was injured Wednesday in a fight that began after a soccer game at Laney Stadium.

The victim's mother said her daughter was kicked several times in the face and head by another player wearing cleats, according to a Richmond County Sheriff's report. She suffered some cuts and bruises to her head.

The incident began after a girl's soccer match between Jefferson County High School and Westside High School. The victim's mother told deputies that there was very rough play during the game and little was being done to stop it by the officials, the report said.

At the end of the game, a fight broke out between the two schools and her daughter was injured.

Richmond County school safety Lt. Richard Roundtree said today that his department wasn't involved in the incident at the soccer match and that discipline issues involving students would be handled administratively.

Mr. Rountree's department

Mr. Rountree's department wasn't involved because there was NO security there that could be found. Why was that, Mr. Rountree? Not ONE officer anywhere. That's why your department isn't involved because you failed to send officers TO BEGIN WITH. If I were the parents, I'd sue you and your department. You are at every other game, why not this one??
Also, the "officials" being referred to were the referees who did NOTHING to stop the rough play initiated by the other team TOWARDS the Westside team. That's what happened.

It's a girl's soccer game lol. That should answer you question why there was no officer.

Basketball, baseball, and football are the popular sports in metro Augusta. Those games take up the officers.

Sassy, maybe the police were never called, and not asked to be present. Why blame them? And why should people expect the sheriff to be there just because there will be a crowd? What about expecting people to act like decent humans instead? Now that would be a novel approach.

NEone, nobody's talking about the police. It's about why RCBOE Public Safety wasn't there, as it should be for all school sports events. This falls on Bedden. One more of many blunders right before he leaves town (thankfully).

Westside had a track meet,

Westside had a track meet, therefore the game was at Laney. I don't remember ever seeing a RCBOE officer at any of the games! Not the soccer games, I guess there is not enough of a crowd at any of those soccer games! Not in Richmond County!

Why didn't the coaches stop the match? Where were the coaches when the fight broke out?

Why does ANY school allow this? Westside principal AND Jefferson County principal, DO YOUR JOB and suspend the teams.

Hold on a minute folks...What you are all failing to realized is that there is no mention of any Administators from either school at this game either. Typically, only Home Team's have Administrative Representation. This is just a complete blunder from bottom all the way to the top. I pray that this young lady is ok and that taxpayers realize now how much budget cuts are hurting our kids INSIDE and OUTSIDE of the CLASSROOM!!!! Perhaps the RCBOE couldn't afford to have Security at the game because it wasn't budgeted for?

I thank God that when my daughter played softball for Lakeside High School many years ago, that the security officer ALWAYS accompanied the team as a volunteer when they played any school in the inner city of Augusta. Plus, he wore his sidearm in plain view of all.

Suspending the teams after this fight with injuries is closing the barn door after the cows got out. Security is needed for all games, female soccer included. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

sassylassie, POLICE OFFICERS from RCBOE typically work only Football and Basketball games. They are not security officers as you implied. Secondly it costs you the taxpayer over $25 an hour to have one officer at any school function.

A fight at a RC soccer game is once in a blue moon. Let alone a girls soccer game lol. This is probably the first fight in 10 years. The same reason you don't see many RCBOE officers at golf or tennis matches either. It would be stupid and foolish to treat every sport the same.

Greenjacket. The game was only held in the inner city(Laney stadium). The soccer game was between a rural school Jefferson county and a suburban school Westside. Jefferson county is in the southern part of the CSRA. About 30-40 minutes away from Augusta. The towns Louisville, Bartow, and Wrens. Westside is mostly a bunch of upper middle class kids from West Augusta. And I don't remember Laney's soccer team ever having a fight. So you can't stereotype everybody in a inner city school.

Sassy, first, it is ridiculous to even need Campus Police at every single event that occurs. However, if they are going to be there they must be paid from either gate receipts (none in girls soccer to pay police) or tax money. So, do you want your tax money going to teachers, books, and campus police during the day or do your prefer they be at everything all of the time. If you think it is needed, then show the need to the school administration and come up with the funds because there aren't any at this time and your tiraid against campus police is unjustified and completely wrong.

First off it wasn’t after the game it was during the game. We had to stop playing because of the fight with like 15 minutes left in the game. We were getting punched, kicked, spit on, and yelled at by Jefferson county girls the whole game and the ref did not call anything. And the coaches did run onto the field to stop it! Believe me we needed everyone we could to hold people back. But this all could have been avoided if the REF would have taken control of the game instead of ignoring it. I completely blame the ref he did nothing and let it get way out of hand. Now we have many players hurt and I’m sure they do as well because of the rough playing. This ref needs to be gone.

first of all i was there. and this article was completely wrong. i was a witness close up and personal. the game was played dirty towards jefferson county so the jc girls played dirty with them or there wouldnt have been a true game at all. truly i blame the refs, but having a girl jump off the bench that wasn't even on westsides soccer team was not neccassary. if that hadn't had happened what had orignally started would have stopped, the girls would have been carded and the game couls have gone on. don't talk about something you dont know about.

I really wish that this

I really wish that this article wasn't published to start with. With so many things happening in the world today, I find it petty to even write an article about a fight at a high school soccer game. However, if you're going to write an article, let's get both sides of the story.
Throughout the whole game, there was not only rough play on Jefferson County's side, but also on Westside's side. Truthfully, the reason the JCHS girls acted as aggresively as they did was due to the fact that the Westside girls started it. However, one must keep in mind that we are dealing with high school girls. It should have been the referee's responsibility to at least issue fouls for BOTH sides and card players. If they would have done that, this would not have been so dramatic.
Furthermore, if a girl who was not even on Westside's team had not jumped from the bench, ran to the practically finished fight, and started throwing punches, the issue would have been avoided. Our JCHS players had pulled away our girl from the fight. When the girl from the bench joined in, she punched many of our players, who were merely trying to retreat to the sideline.
Also, coaches from both teams were on the field seconds after the fight broke out. May it also be known, JCHS girls did NOT spit on any WHS players. Since this is an obviously biased article, readers wouldn't be aware that there was name calling being issued throughout the entire game by the WHS girls, not the JCHS girls.
The JCHS girl's soccer team is more than a team; they're family. They are very close knit and simply don't like seeing any of their team members hurt.
@WHS, I COMPLETELY agree with you about the refs. They were unprofessional through the whole game. Just so you know, though, our team has no injuries other than a few scratches and bruises.

this is ridiculous. BOTH teams were pushing and name calling, it is wrong to say that one started it or did more of it than the other (unless you were out there counting or something). and this incident was not as much a fight as it was this player being beaten up, for what seemed to me no apparent reason, and then attempting to defend herself from the ground. the girl who started the fight had been swinging at people the whole game, and probably should have been (along with other players from both teams) give a card or spoken to by the refs and/or coach.

also the jc fans were very rude, yelling unnecessary comments at the whs players and trying to carry on arguements.

but i am glad that none of the jc girls were seriously injured.

BY THE WAY! A POLICE OFFICER WAS IN THE LANEY STADIUM PARKING LOT AT THE TIME OF THE FIGHT WHICH WAS "DURING" THE GAME BUT WAS NOT CALLED FOR 20 MINUTES AFTER I CALLED 911. HE TOLD ME THAT WHEN HE ARRIVE AS THE PARENTS WERE TAKING THE GIRLS TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM! I HAVE A FEW PICTURES IF ANYONE WANTS THEM ! SNORKELS07@AOL.COM
