Teen indicted in pregnant girl's slaying

The Augusta teenager accused of shooting and killing a pregnant 16-year-old girl was indicted Tuesday.

A grand jury indicted Loviet Nushawn Edwards, 15, on three counts of murder and firearm charges in the death of 16-year-old Tykiah Palmer, of the 2100 block of Trotters Way. The incident occurred in the 2100 block of Ramblewood Drive on Feb. 17.

Palmer, who was between six and seven months pregnant, was taken to the Medical College of Georgia in critical condition and died in the operating room. Doctors performed an emergency caesarian and were able to save her baby for a short time, but the baby was later pronounced dead a short time later.

Edwards, a freshman at Butler High School, was a friend of the victim's 15-year-old brother and it was an argument between the two that eventually led to the fatal shooting. Edwards and the victim's brother had been play fighting when it escalated. Palmer and Edwards exchanged words; then Palmer slapped Edwards, who pulled a gun and shot her in the chest.

Also indicted Tuesday were:

- Windy Renee Scott, 42, of the 100 block of Fox Trace Drive, on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Police said Scott shot William Lewis Scott, 50, once in the head in the parking lot of the Olde Town BP gas station on Feb. 21.

- Harry Lee Jones, 21, on charges of murder, gun and violation of probation charges. Police said Jones was the shooter in the January fatal shooting of 22-year-old Sergio Campbell at McDonald's on Deans Bridge Road.
