Theft suspect arrested after biting employee

NORTH AUGUSTA -- A shoplifting suspect was arrested Monday after she bit an employee, police said.

Deborah Samuels, 56, of the 1600 block of Apple Valley Drive, Augusta, was charged with shoplifting under $1,000 and simple assault and battery, according to a North Augusta Department of Public Safety incident report.

About 12:20 p.m., an employee at Hamrick's at 320 E. Martintown Road noticed a woman remove two ladies suits worth $60 from clothing racks and conceal them under her dress. The woman then tried to leave the store without paying for the clothes, and was stopped by the employee and escorted to a security office. When the woman tried to leave the employee blocked her, and the woman then assaulted the employee and bit her above her left breast, the report says.

This is Samuels' 15th shoplifting offense, police said. She has 14 prior shoplifting convictions, the report states.
