NORTH AUGUSTA -- A shoplifting suspect was arrested Monday after she bit an employee, police said.

Deborah Samuels, 56, of the 1600 block of Apple Valley Drive, Augusta, was charged with shoplifting under $1,000 and simple assault and battery, according to a North Augusta Department of Public Safety incident report.

About 12:20 p.m., an employee at Hamrick's at 320 E. Martintown Road noticed a woman remove two ladies suits worth $60 from clothing racks and conceal them under her dress. The woman then tried to leave the store without paying for the clothes, and was stopped by the employee and escorted to a security office. When the woman tried to leave the employee blocked her, and the woman then assaulted the employee and bit her above her left breast, the report says.

This is Samuels' 15th shoplifting offense, police said. She has 14 prior shoplifting convictions, the report states.

Am I the only one that see's the title as being totally off? THEFT suspect, (clearly she was stealing) arrested AFTER biting employee? Is that basically saying, had she NOT bit, then she'd walk free again?

15th offense? Doesn't

15th offense? Doesn't habitual violator come into play somewhere here? How much under $1000 did she shoplift? Shouldn't it be more like shoplifting under $100? What is the limit before it becomes a felony? What is the number of shoplifting convictions one can accumulate before it becomes a felony? This woman certainly should have been behind bars instead of in the store shopping, I mean shoplifting.

Caught 15 times probably

Caught 15 times probably means 100 or more offenses. I guess some "progressive" judge wil give here 10 days suspended and a weekend of community service or some crap like that. She ought to get the death penalty because she will always be a low life scumbag thief whose crimes will get progressively worse. We need some simple laws that are easily understood by the offenders. If you steal once, 5 years hard time. Double it each time for subsiquent offenses. 10 years for the second offense, 20 for the third, 40 for the fourth. If you rob a person, 25 years first offense. If you harm someone, life. If you kill someone, death. Within two years of implementation the crime rate would be neglegible. Wouldn't that be nice. And nobody would miss all of the locked up and dead scumbags. At least nobody that counts. Judges justify their existence by creating law and punishment on the fly from the bench. We need to take that power away from them. Their only function should be that the accused gets tried and executed by the rules.
