ATLANTA -- Legislation to fine poky lane hogs is speeding along with a firm push today from the House after a quick debate.
The House voted 129-29 in just seven minutes to pass and send to the Senate a bill that would set a minimum fine of $75 for any motorist driving less than the speed limit in the left lane who refuses to pull to the right when a faster vehicle approaches.
Rep. Mark Butler, R-Carrollton, said he introduced House Bill 1047 to smooth the flow of traffic and address a common frustration.
Hogging the left lane at slower speeds is already against the law, but state officials say they don't track traffic tickets in a way that allows them to report how many tickets for it are written each year.
Neither the existing law nor Butler's bill would affect drivers who are maintaining the speed limit. Butler said he wouldn't encourage anyone to exceed the speed limit.
Just pull 'em over, drag 'em out of their car, and tase the idiots. Give the 75 bucks to whoever had to endure their stupidity.
Only men would have built multi-lane roads and kept the two lane road rules, the slower through traffic should keep to the left to allow for smoother and safer merging and exiting!
This still allows 55 in the left lane on BJ. 54 gets you fined, but 55 is still alright.
BUT,if you will notice most people try to go over the speed limit anyway, over on Gordon Hwy. How many people do you see driving the 55 limit?Hardly anyone, these puke heads that passed this bill just want the lane cleared so the can drive 60-70 mile an hour, and not have to slow up for the ones driving 55.
I assume everyone is talking about Bobby Jones EXPRESSWAY? Actually it is anything but an expressway when the radar units are prowling. But this law will make no difference to many folks who live here. Many times I have been on 4 lane roads and the traffic coming and going are all in the left lane, in fact the right lane of Gordon highway is the fastest lane. Makes you wonder who taught people how to drive. Of course if we are making people prove they can drive by giving a test in a parking lot, what do we expect. Now we can start working on the baboom, baboom, baboom, at the current fine level and our lack of money, that is where the money is and tons of it.
I never thought I would live long enough to see the day they ticketed these idiots. Now all we have to do is get the HP to pull them over and ticket them for impeding.
Whatever happened to the "Keep right except to pass" signs?
Cjack, Idiots? That's pretty strong language coming from someone who may become one, some day!
And all you other jacklegs calling people idiots, I double dog dare you to pull me out of my car for doing the speed limit! Try it, and you will meet Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson, point blank!
BTW, I love idiots, it's the stupid idiots I can't stand and this topic has its share, so, adiou!
It's obvious that common sense and common COURTESY have said bye-bye to many drivers. I prefer driving in Boston, DC or NYC for the reason that those drivers are far more courteous in heavy traffic. They all know that within minutes THEY will be the one needing to turn or merge are are far more likely to let another merge. People in the south make it a game to block lanes and prohibit anyone from pulling into traffic from a parking lot. They will look at their phone or the other direction and block you on purpose. It's all about common sense and courtesy people. It shouldn't have to be the law.
This just in: Georgia Legislature votes to fine people for walking too slow at the mall $50. This will stop people from hogging the whole aisle at the on heavy traffic days and most importantly show how they can come up with clever ways to collect more taxes (or other wise known as fines) from people.
Humble, it's like that in San Diego and Los Angeles, too. The motorists know where the bad spots are, and they will let people merge from on ramps, first one onramp car, then theirs. It's very different here.
slow poke drivers. what about the idiots that drive 100 mph??? i bet they don't get fined
Besides the cell phone drivers, trucks hog the left lane. They can't stay up to speed going uphill and still try to pass a slower truck, even if it's going 1 mph slower. Meanwhile we are stuck doing 45 in a 70. Use to be if slow tractors and stuff would pull over if a few cars got behind them, not anymore. everyones looking to sue you.
I agree, the slow pokes in the left lane are an impediment to speeders. It's enough to bring out road the rage in most fools. But what's our legislature doing about lane weavers preoccupied on cell phones? With an absent mind and drifting back and forth.
I would support this bill except there is no provision for tailgating in here. My insurance actually went up from San Diego to Augusta. Why? The number of wrecks and no insurance drivers in the south. Unbelievable! In San Diego, 1 in every 10 cars is stolen and taken to Mexico. But, insurance is STILL higher here. Tailgating is aggressive and dangerous. I have happily slammed my brakes and watched mommies in mini-vans wear their morning coffee because they are too stupid to go into the fast lane (with no one there) instead of tailgate me in the slower lane...STILL going 5-10 over the speed limit. This hillbilly, southern pookie mentality of tailgating and running red lights is out of control. Add them to the bill and we have a deal.
Do the people who hold up a long line of traffic every morning so all their "friends" can pull out of the school (after dropping off their little darlings) count? I had one this morning who decided to hold us all up for 15 cars in on-coming traffic to pass just so she could let out 10 cars from the school in front of her.
Humble, you're so funny or else you and I are driving in an alternate realities when we visit New York. I had cab drivers honk at me the SECOND the light turned green (we were at least 10th in line at the light). I saw another car pull out of the lane and drive on the shoulder then and force it's way back into the lane just to move up two spaces in a packed line of cars. In the South, if you put on your blinker indicating you need to change lanes, MOST people will slow down and give you room to get over. (I'm assuming the rest are Yankees by birth.) On the L.I.E., a signal that you want to move over gets you laughter or the finger and someone purposely riding the bumper of the car in front of them so there's not so much as a foot of space for you to try to make a lane change.
For the record, my removed post did not call any one poster a moron. I simply said people who have trouble merging into traffic are morons who do not pay attention. If someone reading this fits in that category, that's tough, don't drive like a moron. I never have trouble merging because I pay attention coming off the ramp and don't wait until the last minute to look and see if I can merge. They will print an RnR calling people idiots and morons, but we can't use it in a post because of some cry baby. Thats sad. You thin skinned people need to get off these forums if you can't take others opinions and get offended because somones general statement may include you!!!!!
I posted some of the applicable Georgia statutes regarding slow drivers in the left lane at my Blog site:
