Volunteers sought for Saturday cleanup

The Augusta Canal Authority is seeking volunteers and volunteer groups for its semi-annual spring cleanup to be held Saturday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at Lake Olmstead Park near the boat ramp.

Previous volunteer-staffed cleanups have removed tons of trash from the canal and lake.

"We are particularly in need of anyone willing to use their truck or trailer to haul the trash collected to a central location along the canal," said Mary Jacobson who is heading this spring's effort. Jacobson is a member of the Augusta Canal Authority and an officer with  Savannah RiverKeeper.

"This time we hope to remove as much trash as possible including some of the larger debris from parts of the trails, but cannot accomplish this without lots of help. "

Volunteers with canoes or kayak are also needed, she said.

Other cleanup sponsors include Augusta-Richmond County Recreation Department and Savannah RiverKeeper. Augusta-Richmond Solid Waste Department is providing dumpsters.

Volunteers will be served a picnic lunch at Lake Olmstead Park following the clean-up. For more information or to sign up, call (706) 925-1130 or send an e-mail to mejacobson@comcast.net.
