ATHENS, Ga. -- University of Georgia officials unveiled new rules today designed to tone down tailgating parties on the university's north campus next football season.

Trash left over from tailgaters littered the North Campus at the University of Georgia early on a Sunday morning after the Bulldogs played Auburn last fall.

The regulations set new limits on what fans can bring and do on the oldest part of the UGA campus, but stop far short of an outright ban on tailgating - an option the UGA committee that drew up the plan did discuss, said UGA President Michael Adams.

"I think they hit a sensible, happy medium for now," Adams said. Officials will review how well the plan works at the end of the season, he said.

Adams last year said he was dismayed at the amount of trash tailgaters generated on North Campus, where pregame revelers trampled and killed wide expanses of grass.

Adams' cabinet of high-ranking administrators adopted the tailgating rules with little discussion at a meeting this morning.

Among the items to be banned from North Campus are tents, kegs, generators, televisions, amplified music, grills and cookers, tables longer than 4 feet and household furniture (folding chairs are OK).

In addition, tailgaters won't be allowed to set up until four hours before kickoff, according to the new gameday regulations.

Georgia's first home football game is Saturday, Sept. 4 against Louisiana-Lafayette. The first conference game is scheduled for Sept. 18 against Arkansas.

Those changes apply only to North Campus. But a few more new rules will be enforced in all campus parking areas this fall, said Tim Burgess, UGA's senior vice president for business and finance.

Fans are now prohibited from bringing pull-behind items such as trailers and cookers. Golf carts and ATVs are also banned, and a sidewalk parking ban now has been expanded to include the entire campus, including Carlton Street.

The parking changes are mainly to increase the amount of available parking for football fans, Burgess said.

A 7-5 season should also help tone down the tailgating!

Ouch CarlA! Very ouch. (but funny)

There goes the lazyboy! How do they expect us to eat if we can't bring our grills and cookers? I think the kitchen table falls under the 4 foot rule, so we got 'em on that one. That boombox had got to heavy to tote around anyway. Can we still pull the outhouse behind the old truck?

This picture is disgusting! Hasn't anyone ever heard of carrying trash bags with you.

Chillen

I was about to post the same thing. The trash in this picture is ridiculous. Pigs.

And what a waste of money. All those coolers just going to the trash heap. And these are the very students protesting & mad because their tuition & fees might go up.

Just My Opinion

To the comments y'all left, I say...Hardee-Hardee-Har!! But seriously, I totally understand WHY they are doing this, but I don't understand why they are wanting to punish the innocent majority of tailgaters in that area. While all this has gone on, I never once heard of any sort of "police action" in this area during the tailgating period...and I know people who do tailgate in that area, and they've NEVER seen police/security there to enforce any rules. How about trying that first? Now, they will have to have police/security patrol those areas to make sure nobody's there before the 4 hour limit! And God forbid someone tries to sneak in a table that's over 4 foot long! (What about putting 2 4-footers end-to-end?? Hmmmm....) I'm glad I park in a private lot that is not under these guidelines...well, I guess it's not. Doesn't matter though...the only contraband we use is the long table and a canopy if it's raining (is a canopy considered a tent?). Fans of other schools would be wise to note what's happening in Athens, because sooner or later, it could happen at their school.

Just My Opinion

InChristLove and Chillen, I'm not trying to defend the trash you see in the picture, but I do want to remind all that this sort of trashing is NOT exclusive to the campus in Athens. I've been to just about all the other SEC schools and a couple of the ACC schools, and I've witnessed trashing to rival this on their campuses as well. That being said, I really don't have a problem with UGA doing what it feels it needs to do to maintain their campus. I just think other things could be done first, before enacting all these restrictions.

You might be a redneck if...I guess after paying for all the beer, dogs, and wings, they can't afford trash bags. I'd hate to see these slobs houses. Talk about irresponsible. The people that leave this mess aren't real fans, they are just plain out pigs.

Man I thought it was a picture of the canal at first. Maybe we should be more concerned about Augusta instead of publishing pictures of other citys. One way to stop it is to cordon off the area into defined quads and charge a deposit for litter. Make people post a 100 dollar fee for their area. If they clean up then give them back their money, if they don't clean, keep the money. Simple.

Just My Opinion - Why in Christ's name would the school want to pay law enforcement to police these drunken idiots. They should be responsible enough to clean up after themselves. Whether you knew it or not, if someone is going to be required to police these events then they will have to be paid. It doesn't matter if they are already employed or not, this will need to be extra staff beyond the normal law enforcement that would normally police the Athens community and the UGA events. Wake up and put the responsibility where it belongs, completely on the shoulders of these drunken idiots that create these messes.
