Paine memorial for late president

Paine College will hold a memorial service for its eighth president, the late Rev. Dr. Eugene Calhoun Jr., at 11 a.m. Friday in Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel.

Calhoun, who died Dec. 31 in Asheville, N.C., served as the college's president from 1956 to 1970. According to a news release, eight of Paine's buildings were erected during Calhoun's tenure, and stones embedded in the front of the altar at Gilbert-Lambuth were brought back by Calhoun from the ruins of Ephesus in Greece.
