ATLANTA - Former President Jimmy Carter says the latest plan for shuttle diplomacy between Israel and Palestine is a "feeble effort" and criticized the blockade of the Gaza Strip.
He also said today he hopes the U.S. takes a more "balanced" position in its relations with Israel.
Carter said he still hopes diplomacy can bring lasting peace to the Middle East, but it will require a "dramatic change" in Israeli policy.
The former president spoke at the Malta Forum, a two-day conference in Atlanta.
The conference comes as Washington has expressed rare public outrage over Israel's plans to build new Jewish homes in a traditionally Arab part of Jerusalem.
Well, one thing is for certain.... Jimmy Carter knows a whole lot about feeble efforts. His term in office proved that!
But he got a Nobel Peace Prize for solving this problem decades ago.......
And here I thought it was for the same reason Obama won his "Peace" prize. They were handed prizes for their great big award winning toothy smiles. After all, smile and the world smiles with you!
I wish Carter would just sit back, quietly enjoy his golden years and stay out of politics. He wasn't so good at it when it was his turn at the podium.
Yes, Mr. Carter. We yearn for the days of embassy siege and hostage taking. Can this guy be any more super lame?
LOL eyes, right on target. I'm not certain Obama wants advice from the only man keeping him from being the worst president ever. (of course, he's only been in office for 1 year. It just seems like 10)
I understand customers will soon be eligible to receive a Nobel Peace Prize by opening a new account at their bank.
There is no one shriller, no one louder, no one more vicious when it comes to hate speech about America that ex-President Jimmy Carter. He hates America and he hates Israel. Ignore him.
Also, look at this meaningless phrase from the unnamed Associated Press writer:
The conference comes as Washington has expressed rare public outrage over Israel's plans to build new Jewish homes in a traditionally Arab part of Jerusalem.
What does he mean “Washington has expressed . . . outrage. . .”? There is no consensus in the City of Washington or even within the Congress or the State Department over anything in the mid-East. It's all about a “process.”
He still is taken with the idea that people care what he thinks.
Though George W Bush did a great deal to tie the American president’s hands with regard to exerting effective pressure on Israel, that was not always the case. A courageous American president does have leverage over Israeli policy. Carter's strength and courage as US president was generally unappreciated due to the constant effort of the Zionists to undermine and discredit his presidency. But compare this with what is going on now. This is a quote from Jimmy Carter’s book,
“The Blood of Abraham”, whose strength and courage as US president was nver significantly recognized, largely because of constant Zionnist attempts to discredit and undermaine his presidency.
“As president, I considered this major invasion to be an over reaction to the PLO attack, a serious threat to peace in the region, and perhaps part of a design to establish a permanent Israeli presence in southern Lebanon. Also, such use of American weapons including cluster bombs violated the legal agreement between the United States and Israel, which specified that such armaments sold by us could be used only for defensive purposes against an attack on Israel.
“In spite of my expressions of concern and worldwide outcry, Begin seemed determined to keep his forces in Lebanon for an extended period and – in another direct violation of American law — to transfer American weapons, including artillery and armored vehicles, to the Lebanese militia commanded by Major Saad Haddad. These troops had been trained and supported by the Israelis, in order to seal off the southern portion of the country against Palestinian terrorists. In carrying out this assignment, they also prevented Lebanese regular troops and UN peacekeeping forces from entering the area.
“After consulting with Secretary Cyrus Vance and with key supporters of Israel in congress, I decided that we could not permit the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon to continue. In the event that Begin would not accede to our wishes, we prepared to notify Congress, as required by law, that US weapons were being used illegally in Lebanon, which would have automatically cut off all military aid to Israel. Also, I instructed the state department to prepare a UN Security Council resolution condemning Israel’s action.
“The American consul general in Jerusalem was instructed to deliver a message to Prime Minister Begin that explained these plans and urged that he withdraw his forces. The report came back from Jerusalem that Begin read the message, stood quietly for a few moments, and then said, “Its over.” “
WoW... and I'd thought my impression of Jimmy could not drop any lower..........then it does....
