Portions of Old Evans Road from Dent Street to Harden Street were blocked off, Geo. You must have missed it, or they didn't have it posted until after your comment!

Sassy, there are posted

Sassy, there are posted different speed limits on that section. I'm on it nearly every day. Most of the time people are a few miles over the limit.
During quitting time, it's fairly slow. However, any walking on the shoulder takes a chance of being hit. I've seen plenty of idiots driving like they were Indy racers. Maybe the county should install speed bumps!

There is a DOT plan to widen

There is a DOT plan to widen Old Evans Road and completely re-work the mess at Old Petersburg and Blue Ridge where they end at Old Evans. Someone high up in power in the Columbia County government has a lot of clout with the DOT and has stalled the widening for years, indeed, even decades.

By the way, the widening plan

By the way, the widening plan is the reason that the Smile Gas station moved from the east side to the west side of Old Evans. The DOT now owns the old Smile Gas station site. The plan calls for a single stop light and a true intersection there instead of the two T-bone connections there. And the intersection is supposed to be about eight lanes wide.

Do you know something we don't know, LL? If it is just a "someone," someone else could possibly do something about it!

Excluding the costs, what

Excluding the costs, what benefit is there in not widening Old Evans? It's already widened on both ends! Could there possibly be some encroachment problems? I know of no property owner with enough influence to delay construction, and that includes Greenfield and the apartment complex! Could be, the Hindu's have influence, they have money, but the project would enhance their property, so who's holding out?

It's got to be someone with

It's got to be someone with serious political clout, because the DOT has completed plans and was buying up serious rights of way in 2004, 2005, 2006, etc. They have even made offers as late as 2007. But someone local is holding up the project.

Let's hope any project that

Let's hope any project that does proceed will include sidewalks, something seemingly foreign to Columbia County. Blue Ridge in particular is an accident waiting to happen. Many students in the area stay after school for activities and then walk that route home and there is no place safe to walk. In addition, Old Evans traffic is heavy at that hour as people travel it to avoid Washington Rd. For the people who acutally live in the area, turning into or out of the side streets becomes a risky activity. The article says the driver swerved to avoid another, my guess is he/she swerved to avoid someone turning.

From 2010 Atlas maps it

From 2010 Atlas maps it appears the "Not-River Watch Pkwy" will end at an intersection with Pleasant Home Rd. at Washington Rd. On the RR tracks. "Your 1 cent tax dollars at work". Remember all of the "flags" along the right of ways along Old Petersburg Rd. The "widening project that never happended. They disappeared after the GADOT office closed at Baston and Petersburg. Not-River Watch Pkwy "ending in Evanstowne" at "now Lowes parking lot".

Remaining money for R/W

Remaining money for R/W purchase approved in last 6 months. Remaining R/W aquisition underway now. Project is expensive and construction money must be identified. Project is not dead. Will connect to town center drive and wash road (McDonalds intersection). No one is trying to stop it other than lack of money due to economy.

Little Lamb is right. I have

Little Lamb is right. I have lived off of Old Evans Road a block away from Old Petersburg. They have been talking about widening that road for over 10 years! It was a miracle we actually got a stop light at the Old Petersburg intersection. My oldest wants to ride his bike to Lakeside and I won't let him because of the crazy people that drive Old Evans Road. I was shocked when I moved here that there were no sidewalks for these kids! I thought at least Briarwood, McCormick, and Candlewood would have them for the kids to walk to school on!
