No charges are anticipated after a deputy was struck by a car Sunday night and dragged about 50 feet.
Deputy Jason Turner was wrapping up a three-car crash on the 3300 block of Milledgeville Road shortly before 8 p.m. when he stepped into the roadway to investigate a piece of debris in the road, said Sgt. Jason Johnson with the Georgia State Patrol.
An oncoming motorist saw Turner's blue flashing lights and, believing it a traffic stop, steered wide into the turn lane as a safety precaution, Johnson said.
When she struck Turner, she immediately hit the brakes, but the deputy was still dragged about 50 feet, Johnson said.
Turner was badly injured and rushed to Medical College of Georgia for treatment; he was alert and awake when the investigating trooper went to check on him later that evening, Johnson said.
The driver who struck Turner was remorseful and upset about the incident, Johnson said.
"There was no reckless driving involved," Johnson said. "It was just a bad accident."
Uh-oh. That's near where the shooting was, isn't it?
Wow, this is one of those accidents that you dream about and pray you never are in. I am sure that the lady driver is very upset as I know I would be. Let us all pray for the officer and everyone involved.
Well maybe he should have looked in both directions before stepping into the road. That is what mama taught me as a child. I bet he lokks both ways now.
Seems to me like she was driving a little to fast if she "immediately hit the brakes" after hitting him to drag him 50 feet. When you see flashing blue lights you are suppose to slow down, aren't you?
Yeah, you're SUPPOSED to slow down when blue lights are on the side of the road, but people can't be inconvenienced by these things nowadays, can they? However, Officer Turner should have had his reflective vest on. Maybe the accident could have been avoided. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Officer Turner.
