The Aiken County coroner says a Saturday fire in Wagener appears to be an attempt to cover up a homicide.

According to a statement released today by Coroner Tim Carlton, when fire departments responded to a fire at a mobile home on 226 Buckboard Road they discovered the body of George Griffin, 57.

An autopsy today indicates that Griffin died before the fire started. Griffin had several suspicious injuries that were discovered by pathologists in Newberry, S.C. Even though the body was seriously burned, Griffin was positively identified.

The death is being investigated by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office and the coroner's office, Carlton said.
