COLUMBIA - South Carolina legislators have delayed discussion of a bill doing away with a requirement for driver's license vision tests every five years.

The House's transportation subcommittee said today it will discuss later requiring vision tests for drivers under age 65 only when they renew their licenses every 10 years.

The state adopted a 10-year license renewal system in 2003 but still required drivers to submit to vision tests every five years and imposed a $50 fine for drivers who didn't comply.

The Department of Motor Vehicles says it has not enforced that requirement and no one is complying with it.

Drivers 65 and older renew licenses every five years and must prove their vision is good.

Maybe no one is complying with the vision test law because SC drivers WERE NOT told of the requirement - I am an SC driver with a 10 year license - I was not told when I got the license that I had to have my vision tested in five years and am not sure I will get a "reminder" from the DMV when my five year test is due - are people notified when they are supposed to come in to have their vision tested?

I also have a 10 year license-but in Georgia. Can't help but wonder if Georgia has this vision requirement too. If so, I was never informed.

I really do not "see" how any one could "overlook" requirements for the vision test.
