Two teens arrested in Butler student's beating

Two teenagers were arrested this morning at Butler High School after the brutal beating of another teen Monday.

The teens -- identified as 16-year-old Berten Blockett and 14-year-old Mark Daniel Richard Musick - claimed to members of a gang called the "Apple Valley Posse" and said they had been prowling the area around Circular Drive looking for someone to attack, Richmond County Sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles said in an e-mail.

The victim, a 16-year-old Butler High School student whose name was not released, was walking his girlfriend home from school on Circular Drive when police said the suspects and three other boys approached him. The victim quickly called his mother and said he feared he was about to get "jumped" by the other boys.

While he was still on the phone, he was attacked by the boys and had to be taken to the hospital for multiple broken bones to his face. He is currently at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital consulting with surgeons about the injuries, Lt. Peebles said.

In his e-mail, Lt. Peebles said the teens were "completely unrepentant about the attack" and had expressed "amusement with the incident."

They were charged with one count each of aggravated battery and unlawful criminal street gang activity.

Lt. Peebles said the teens had been committed to the Richmond County Youth Detention Center and that they plan to make more arrests.

Anyone with information on the incident can call the sheriff's office at (706) 821-1080.
