THOMSON, Ga. - A former school band director in Thomson was taken into custody this afternoon on charges related to child pornography.

Gary Nicholson, special agent in-charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 7 Office identified the suspect as 30-year-old Philip Bradley Pirkle, of the 400 block of Johns Road, Thomson.

Pirkle was charged with one count of possession of child pornography and one count of using a computer to entice a child for indecent purposes, Nicholson said.

Pirkle was arrested at his home shortly before 1:30 p.m. and taken to the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center. He had been under investigation since July 2009 when authorities seized a desktop computer, laptop and other equipment from his residence.

The investigation began after a complaint from a mother about reported communications between her daughter and Pirkle on MySpace. The mother first told the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department about the matter before it was turned over to the GBI.

Pirkle resigned his teaching duties at both Thomson Middle and Thomson-McDuffie County Junior High schools in July after the criminal investigation began.
