A 41-year-old Beech Island woman told police that a man raped her and robbed her at gunpoint in Augusta early Monday.
A Richmond County sheriff's report says the woman told deputies she was walking to a convenience store about 2:30 a.m. when a man in a red Toyota Camry stopped and asked her if she needed a ride. She said the man drove her from Gloverville to a dirt road off Old Savannah Road, where he raped her and took her money.
The suspect was described as black with light skin and light blue eyes, 30 to 34 years old, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 220 pounds.
He probably wanted to drop her off at her intended destination, but the gas pedal got stuck and they ended up on the dirt road.
Walking to a convenience store at 0230???? For what?? Yeah, right! Good morning MS!
Some people may have a legit reason for walking to the store at 0230, but if it was me, someone better be on their deathbed and me going to the store is going to have something to do with keeping them alive. Has anyone noticed the common factors in this type of crime? The victims are almost always alone in the middle of the night.
It's not the 0230 that jumps out as me as much as a single female accepting a ride from an (presumably) unknown male. Think about it.....
While I must agree with all comments so far, it would be nice for anyone to be able to walk anywhere at anytime without fear of attack of any kind. I don't care what she was doing, rape is not an acceptable treatment for her untimely walk.
She was on her way to get a pack of cigarettes for son, husband or friend. A loving smart human.
I sense a blame the victim mentality on the part of Cobalt George and other mostly male commentators.
ok, i am female, and i have to say it was really really stupid to be walking around that late at night, then to get into a car with a stranger.........come on, what was she thinking?????
So nice to see Cain on another thread,, not just war, blood & guts...and could not believe the short post.. I'm I dreaming??
A similar blame the victim mentality exists among those who excuse the fact that men get raped in jail or prison and see rape as part of the criminal "justice" system. They too were asking for rape by either committing a crime or by being in the wrong place at the wrong time and getting themselves arrested - so the illogical argument goes.
Cain, My feeling are, if they are in jail, getting raped should be part of their daily required activities.
Daddy was right. Never accept a ride from a stranger and never pick up hitchhikers.
Where was she going at 2:30am in the morning???????
Those men with their pants on the ground are asking to be raped in prison.
Years ago when I smoked, I drove a mile in a blizzard to get a pack of cigarettes when I ran out. I would like to think I wouldn't have tried to walk there if I had not had wheels, but frankly I'm not sure. While I agree that a person should be able to walk on the street any time without being assaulted and raped, I also know there are a lot of vile, evil people out there, whom I personally would prefer to avoid. They will get due justice on the final judgment day; some of the arrogant smugness may disappear at that time.
I didn't know that Gloverville was the place to pick up 'stutes'. And light skinned blue eyes?
It doesn't matter what time it was, what she was going to get, or any other of your petty comments. No, she should not have accepted a ride from a total stranger, but that does not and will never mean she was asking for what she got. Some of you astound me with the mentality.
Same comments left if it was 2:30 in the afternoon? If she was going to get some diapers, etc.?
Rape is the lowest of the low, but 2:30am...light skinned, black guy, with light blue eyes, eh...riiiggghhhtttt?!?!?!
@Petey Aitchess' first comment: you sir, win +1 free internets! That was Epic!
Say what you want, but I'm a grown man and you can't pay me to go walking around Augusta at night. That's just asking for problems.
" Never accept a ride with a stranger at 2:30am " .......shouda been the 11th commandment I guess.
If everything in this article is the truth then she should have never accepted a ride from a stranger. That being said a woman was still raped. You all ought to be ashamed of yourself for blaming the victim. Scumbags that prey on women like this need to be wiped off of the face of the Earth.
Common sense doesn't always prevail. It doesn't make an excuse for rape, but who in their right mind is going to be out walking the streets at 2 something in the morning????
