An Augusta woman was briefly arrested on child cruelty charges after her son told police that she had hit him on the face and upper chest with a belt.
Richmond County jail records state that Patricia Diane Hewitt, 38, of the 3500 block of Biltmore Place, was arrested Wednesday morning in connection with the incident. The the charge was later dropped.
A Richmond County sheriffs report states that about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday an officer responded to a domestic dispute between Hewitt and her 15-year-old son at their residence. Hewitt told the officer that she had tried to discipline her son for coming home late, and that her son had pushed her and then struck her with a closed fist. The officer noticed a small amount of blood on the left side of the womans temple.
The son told the officer that his mother had struck him with a belt several times, and the officer observed a large welt under the sons left eye and what appeared to be the imprint of a belt buckle on the teenagers face.
Hewitt, her son and a witness to the dispute were all taken to the Richmond County Law Enforcement Center for further investigation, and Hewitt was subsequently arrested and charged, the report states.
Those charges were later dropped.
