Man, 57, dies in house fire

An Augusta man died tonight in a house fire on 13th Avenue.

Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said firefighters responded to the fire at 938 13th Ave. about 6 p.m. and found the house engulfed in flames. As they were fighting the fire, they found 57-year-old Sylvester Jackson in a back room of the house. Mr. Jackson was taken to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 7 p.m., Mr. Bowen said.

Fire department Lt. Neal Brown said the victim was home alone at the time of the fire. A brother also lived at the residence.

Flames from the burning house also caused a neighbor’s attic to catch fire. The Augusta chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the brother of the victim and the neighbor.

Lt. Brown said that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation lab in Atlanta, Mr. Bowen said.
