The weekend kicks off a bit early, with the 12 Bands Celebration opening at 4 p.m. today with Tara Scheyer and the Mudpuppy Band performing at Fort Discovery, 1 Seventh St.

The event will feature a second concert at 8 tonight featuring the Blue Dogs.

Admission is $12 for the afternoon concert and $25 for the evening performance. See www.12Bands.org.

The organization will match young cancer patients with 12 artists and present charity concerts in their honor on a monthly basis.

The concerts today are in honor of Brennan Simkins, an Augusta boy undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukemia.

Event organizer Joe Stevenson said he wanted each of the acts to have some connection to the cause. He said Ms. Scheyer’s child-oriented performances seemed like an obvious inclusion.

“She really fits in with what we’re trying to do, and the Blue Dogs came on because they are close friends of the Simkinses ,” he said. “These are acts that understand what we are trying to do, which is to celebrate and make this a memorable night. We want it to feel like a holiday party.”

Here's a sampling of other events this weekend:
