Man charged in school incident


AIKEN - An Appling man faces weapons charges after being arrested at Byrd Elementary School in Graniteville, the Aiken County Sheriff's Office said today.


Lon Norville Annis, 45, of the 6700 block of Ridge Road, is charged with disturbing schools, carrying a weapon on school property and pointing and presenting a firearm.

About 9:30 a.m. Wednesday sheriff's deputies were sent to the school in response to a report that someone had a weapon on school property. At the school deputies learned that Mr. Annis had pointed a pistol at Steve Moore, who had pointed a finger at and touched Mr. Annis’ shoulder, sheriff's Sgt. Dave Myers said.

The school was placed on lockdown until deputies were able to make sure the area was safe.

Mr. Moore was charged with simple assault and battery, written a citation and released.

Mr. Annis was being held today in the Aiken County Detention Center.
