Man shot, killed this morning

A 27-year-old Augusta man was fatally shot this morning on Gordon Highway in what is believed to be a robbery attempt.


Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen identified the victim as Anthony Michael Edwards, of the 3300 block of Kenny Road.

The shooting took place about 12:40 this morning in the old Winn-Dixie parking lot at 1755 Gordon Highway, Mr. Bowen said in a news release.

Mr. Edwards and his girlfriend had pulled into the parking lot with possible car trouble, he said, when they were approached by at least one person who tried to rob them.

Mr. Edwards was shot at least once and pronounced dead at the scene at 1:20 a.m. His body will be sent to the GBI – Augusta Lab for an autopsy later today.

Investigators are searching for a man described as black, 18-25 years old, 170-200 pounds, who wore a dark hooded top with his face concealed, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
