Fatal crash this morning in Aiken County

A Warrenville man was killed this morning in a single-vehicle traffic accident.

According to a news release from Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, Marcus A. Bass, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened about 8:30 a.m. on Highway 421 near Gentry Hill Road. According to witnesses, Mr. Bass was traveling at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass in the right lane.

He lost control of the Ford Expedition he was driving, it left the roadway, struck several trees, and he was partially ejected through the sunroof.

A passenger, who was not identified, was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital. His status was not reported.

Both driver and passenger were not wearing their seatbelts, according to the coroner, and speed appears to be a significant factor in the crash -- the 35th traffic fatality in Aiken County in 2009.
