SC coastal bridge to close

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — A swing bridge linking Sullivans Island to the mainland closes this weekend to allow replacement of the span dating to World War II.

Transportation Department officials say the bridge between the island and Mount Pleasant will close for about 10 days beginning Sunday. That target date could change depending on wind and tides.

A barge will bring in a 640-ton main swing span to replace the old one as part of the $31 million project. The bridge was widely seen in photos 20 years ago when the 135 mph winds of Hurricane Hugo wrenched the span from its foundation.

During the closure, Sullivans Island residents will have to cross to the nearby Isle of Palms and take the Breech Inlet bridge connecting the two islands.
