Aiken schools to discuss facilities

The Aiken County school board will meet tonight to brainstrorm on how to further execute a capital facility-needs campaign.

The school district began the process two months ago by using an internal facility-needs report and a commissioned study of the district from a Columbia-based construction group. The goal is to create a long-term view of upgrading the district's aging schools and possibly expanding where schools are overcrowded.

This is the first time in more than 30 years that a project this large has been recommended, according to Aiken County administrators.

The board has received information from district administrators for several meetings on program needs that will be affected by any facility upgrades. Two law firms also met with the board last week to go over bond referendum options to possibly pay for the project.

The board's 7 p.m. meeting will be at 1000 Brookhaven Drive. Visit for information on the studies and tonight's meeting.
