Woods accepts blame but cancels another meeting with police

WINDERMERE, Fla. — Tiger Woods canceled yet another meeting with state troopers and posted a statement on his Web site that said the accident was his fault, but he did not address lingering questions about the crash that sent him to a hospital.

The statement was posted about an hour before state troopers were to meet with the world's No. 1 golfer at his home inside the gates of Isleworth. A meeting was not rescheduled.

In a tape of a 911 call released today, two days after the accident, a neighbor told dispatchers that a black Cadillac Escalade hit a tree and "I have someone down in front of my house."

Woods' neighbor never mentions the golfer by name, and the call is inaudible at several points because of the bad connection.

"I came out here just to see what was going on," the neighbor, who was not identified, told dispatchers. "I see him, and he's laying down."

One woman is heard in the background yelling, "What happened?"

"This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me," Woods said. "I'm human and I'm not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again."

Woods said it was a private matter, and he wanted to keep it that way.

"Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible," he said.

Windermere Police Chief Daniel Saylor has said Woods' wife, Elin Nordegren, used a golf club to smash out a rear window to help him get out of the SUV when she heard the crash from inside their home at 2:25 a.m. Friday.

"The only person responsible for the accident is me," Woods said. "My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false."

Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol said Woods' attorney, Mark Nejame, informed the patrol that Woods would not be meeting with troopers Sunday afternoon.

"It has not been rescheduled," Montes said. "He's not required by law to give us a statement, and we'll move forward with our investigation without it."

Police first tried to interview Woods on Friday, but his wife asked if they could return the next day because he was sleeping.

As they headed to Woods' $2.4 million house inside the gates of Isleworth on Saturday afternoon, highway patrol dispatch put through a phone call to troopers from Woods' agent, informing them that Woods and his wife would be unavailable to talk until today.

The National Enquirer published a story last week alleging that Woods had been seeing a New York nightclub hostess and that they recently were together in Melbourne, where Woods competed in the Australian Masters.

The woman, Rachel Uchitel, denied having an affair with Woods when contacted by The Associated Press.

Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred confirmed she was representing Uchitel when she was reached by the AP on Sunday.

"She is with me in L.A.," Allred said later in an e-mail to the AP. "We plan to meet and then we'll decide on the next step, which we do not plan to announce to the press."

Uchitel arrived at Los Angeles International Airport late this morning and was met by Allred and escorted out of the baggage claim area and into a black car. Uchitel did not speak to reporters except to ask that she be left alone.

Woods is to play host to his Chevron World Challenge this week in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The tournament benefits his foundation. Woods' news conference had been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, although it was not clear if he would still play, or even attend.

ok, so likely what happened

ok, so likely what happened was this. His wife was mad about hearing of a possible affair an chased tiger out down the road with a golf club. She hit his car, smashed the window, causing woods to swerve off the road and hit the hydrant and tree.

case closed, report done with.

" It's all my fault "

" It's all my fault " Classic abused wife statement. I guess when his wife pulls a Phil Hartman on him, we'll all have to have a week of mourning for the him. I guess that is one advantage that Jack Nickalus had over Tiger, his wife never tried to kill him. That we know of.

The media keeps harping on

The media keeps harping on the fact that Tiger is not talking to police. He doesn't have to. Who cares what happened. It's none of our business. Of course media dumb asses are going to drag this out for as long as they can.

I think he is handling this

I think he is handling this all wrong. I hear there are people around today trained in a way that they can tell everytime someone tells a lie.
Lying in public has become a risky business for anyone. If he is not telling the truth he has made a bad choice.

like i said, o.j. and nicole

like i said, o.j. and nicole all over again. and, i'd like to add, for justus and his followers. your comments about the willie nelson concert slated for january at the bell auditorium, while funny, really showed your ignorance. portraying this man as a redneck, all the while not knowing that he is one of the biggest advocates for race relations in the world. maybe you should do some research on ol' willie. i think you might like what you find. he's an artist, song writer, guitar player extraordinaire, one of the best ever. he puts his heart and soul into every single show. he's awesome. and, i'll bet you he would never snatch a microphone from a teenage girl, in her moment of glory, and proclaim that a white girl should have won the award.

Until Tiger actually owns the majors records, he is still chasing. As far as this incident goes, who knows? When in Augusta about 2 years ago, Elin left her iPod at the Y and she sent hubby back to retrieve it. They have enough money to have a valet to tend to these domestic things. I think maybe she sent him out to the 7-11 to get some pads and he was [filtered word].

Cold, can he refuse to speak

Cold, can he refuse to speak to law enforcement, who were called to the scene? It was not on his property if he hit a fire hydrant, public utility, or a neighbor's tree? I understand that personal details behind the cause of the accident are not the right of the public to know, but if he was lying in the street when authorities arrived, after having a wreck, he should not be exempted from answering questions normally asked of the average citizen in similar circumstances.

You've got that right,

You've got that right, smartie. My family, UGA side, have long kept up with who has class in the pro world and who doesn't. Phil is the favorite with all of my golf following friends. That doesn't mean Tiger's abilities are not admired. His attitude is what really turns off true historical golf fans.

Fedup, we are leaving him

Fedup, we are leaving him alone. And it seems that so are the law enforcement authorities and that is the problem I have. Do you think you could get away with doing what he did and not be hauled out in handcuffs? Since when does a citizen get to decide not to speak with police about a traffic accident that he was involved in that occurred off his property? I don't give a rat's rear about the details of what lead up to the occurrence. But he should not get a pass on explaining why he damaged a neighbor's property and a public utility (I am assuming that he didn't own the fire hydrant and water system supplying it) and was lying in a public street when the police arrived. Forgive me if I err on where he was lying. It was reported to be a street, not a driveway.
