Security upgrades at fort's Gate 5 force temporary traffic changes

Traffic was backed up on Tobacco Road this morning as crews started construction on Fort Gordon’s Gate 5.

Only inbound traffic will be allowed in Fort Gordon’s Gate 5 off Tobacco Road Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The change in traffic flow is due to a security upgrade at the entrance that begins today, according to a Fort Gordon news release. Two-way traffic will be allowed after 8:30 a.m. and on Saturday and Sunday. Crews will be making exceptions for school buses, the release said. The project is expected to be complete in late February or early March.

Marla Jones, a fort spokesperson, said the uprgrades had been planned since earlier this year to conform to Department of the Army standards for security.
