Veterans Day events planned

There will be several ways to commemorate the Veterans Day holiday this week. They include:


* Veterans Day Ceremony: 9 a.m. Wednesday courtyard at Georgia War Vete­rans Nursing Home, 1101 15th St.; with Col. Laurence M. Mixon, commander of the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade from the U.S. Army Signal Center and Fort Gordon; (706) 721-2531

* Veterans Day Parade: 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, starts at 13th and Greene streets; ends at All Wars Monument at Fourth and Broad streets for Veterans Day ceremony; with U.S. Army’s Signal Corps Band, color guard and marching unites from Fort Gordon, high school ROTC units, bands, veteran and civic groups; (706) 650-7782

* Veteran’s Day ceremony by American Legion Post 71: 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Wade Hampton Park, off Georgia Avenue, North Augusta; (803) 292-7600

* Veterans Day ceremony: 11 a.m. Wednesday, D. Douglas Barnard, Jr., Amphitheatre, Augusta State University, 2500 Walton Way; presented by Augusta State’s Department of Military Science; features two speakers, retired Brig. Gen. Robert H. Woods and Shawn Hammond, both former ROTC cadets at Augusta State;

* Veterans Memoriabilia: Through November; Nancy Carson Library, 135 Edgefield Road, North Augusta; featuring flags, photos, plaques, newspaper clippings and other items pertaining to the history of The Jesse C. Savannah River Site resumes normal activity

A suspicious item was discovered Wednesday afternoon at the Savannah River National Laboratory which prompted emergency responseactivities.
