Aiken school bus incident under investigation

AIKEN – An Aiken County school bus driver is on administrative leave after being accused of hitting a 6-year-old student.

Melinda Harp, the mother of the Chukker Creek Elementary student, told police that the child returned home from school Friday with contusions on his neck and top of his arm, according to an Aiken Department of Public Safety incident report. The boy told his mother that a female bus driver struck him, according to the report.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety investigators observed the fresh contusions, took photos and handed the case over to the juvenile division, according to the report.

The incident is under investigation by the Aiken County Public School District, said Cecelia Davidson, associate superintendent of administration.

“The bus driver will remain on administrative leave until the investigation is complete,” Dr. Davidson said.

Investigators plan to interview the child today or tomorrow to determine whether the bus driver faces criminal charges, Aiken public safety Capt. Wendell Hall said. The bus driver could face a charge of simple assault, he said.

"We have to see if it occured, what prompted it and how much did it occur," Capt. Hall said. "Interviewing the child will let us know if charges will be levied."
