Man convicted of rape, kidnapping

A jury convicted a young Augusta man of rape, kidnapping and aggravated stalking charges this afternoon.

Jamal R. Staten, 20, was convicted of the crimes in Richmond County Superior Court for an Oct. 6 attack on a former girlfriend.

The young woman told the jury this week about how Mr. Staten, whom she met in high school while both were sophomores, became progressively more controlling and violent in their relationship.

Mr. Staten was charged with battery in April 2008 for allegedly beating the young woman after she broke off their relationship. During the October attack, Mr. Staten forced the victim to send text and voice messages indicating that she wanted to drop the battery charge against him.

Judge Carl C. Brown Jr., who presided over the three-day trial, will sentence Mr. Staten at a later date. He faces a minimum of 25 years in prison.
