Roadwork backs up Columbia County traffic

Road construction created a traffic jam extending for miles this afternoon on Washington Road.

Work crews contracted by the state Department of Transportation are working on an intersection improvement at Washington and Halali Farm roads.

At one point, traffic on Washington Road was reduced to one lane, creating a line a cars stretching from William Few Parkway to North Belair Road, according to police.

The project will add turn lanes from Washington Road onto Halali Farm Road and add a traffic signal at the intersection, according to DOT officials.

The work started in May and is about 10 percent complete, officials said. The scheduled completion date is April 30.

DOT’s contract with Beams Contracting allows crews to reduce traffic to one lane except from 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Sundays.
