Walk to raise hunger awareness

Golden Harvest Food Bank will hold a Hunger Awareness Walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, starting at the Aiken Public Library, 314 Chesterfield St. S.W.

Staged in observance of Hunger Action Month, this year's walk will primarily benefit the food bank’s BackPack program in South Carolina, which begins this month in Aiken at J.D. Lever Elementary and will provide 100 children at risk of hunger with a backpack of nutritious food each weekend throughout the school year, the agency said in a news release. One in five children in the region are at risk of hunger daily, according to Golden Harvest.

Golden Harvest serves 11 counties in South Carolina and 19 in Georgia.

Anyone who wants to participate in the wallk can come to the Aiken Public Library on Saturday at 7 a.m. to register. For more information, call (803) 648-0752 or visit www.goldenharvest.org.
