More budget cuts loom for Aiken County schools after state action

AIKEN -- More budget cuts could be on the way for Aiken County schools.

The South Carolina Budget and Control Board made across-the-board cuts of 4.04 percent on Thursday. Aiken County Comptroller Tray Traxler said it would be a couple of weeks before the state Education Department would detail the cuts, but going back to the district’s fund balance to balance the budget could be an option.

The school district announced five-day furloughs for teachers and 10-day furloughs for administration last week to save $2.4 million.

The school board tabled a $118,000 cut to supply budgets pending an announcement from the Budget and Control Board.
