None hurt in Columbia County bus accident

Though some Columbia County pupils were likely late getting home from school this afternoon, none were injured when their bus was involved in a minor Martinez wreck.

The wreck occurred at about 3 p.m. near the intersection of The Pass and Furys Ferry Road. A 2002 Toyota Tundra failed to yield while turning left onto The Pass from Furys Ferry Road and was struck on the side by a 1994 Ford Crown Victoria, said Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jim DiArenzo.

A piece of PVC pipe from a bike rack on the back of the truck broke off and struck the bus’ fog light, Deputy DiArenzo said.

“Nothing hit the bus but the PVC,” he said. “The bus was not involved if the PVC had not broke the light.”

Both drivers only sustained minor injuries, Deputy DiArenzo said.

Dewayne Porter, the director of transportation for Columbia County schools, said he believes the bus was hauling Lakeside high and middle school pupils.
