Fort Discovery releases new operating hours

Fort Discovery will implement its new schedule and hours effective Tuesday.

The museum will now be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays only. The new operating hours are part of a restructuring by the National Science Center Inc., the public-private partnership between the nonprofit and the Army that operates Fort Discovery.

Rob Dennis, the president and CEO of the National Science Center, said last week that the decision is a result of an analysis of the current business model and a national mission that began in December.

"What we wanted to do as we went through this business analysis is look at where we're allocating our resources for this national mission" to provide educational outreach in science, technology, engineering and math, he said.

In its long-term restructuring plan, the National Science Center plans to eventually move operations other than the museum to its 88-acre property near Fort Gordon.
