Senior player eyes Regions marks

Kenny Larry will have to come from behind Sunday if he expects to break and tie various Regions Cup senior division records.

Larry had 1-over-par 73 today in the first round of the Jones Creek Classic and trails Greg Scurlock by two shots and Joe Fairey by one. Mike Jackson, Chuck Withers and Rob Bissell matched Larry’s 73.

Larry, 53, has rallied to win two of his five victories this season, including last week’s Orville White Cup, where he also trailed by two shots after the first round.

Should Larry win today, he would set records for single-season victories with six and consecutive victories with four. He would also tie the senior division career victory record of 13. Larry had already clinched the Senior Player of the Year award going into this tournament, the final event of the season.

Doug Weiss moved into position to win his second consecutive regular division player of the year award with 71 today. He’s tied for the tournament lead with three-time Augusta City Amateur winner Jordan Johnstun and Edgefield teenager Garland Smith, who has finished second in his past two starts.

Defending champion Jay Blackburn. who is the only player who can catch Weiss in the points race for player of the year honors, opened with 79. Blackburn needs to win and hope Weiss finishes sixth or worse.
