Aiken tops Berkmar in season opener

AIKEN - Senior tailback Aubrey Johnson rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns, and junior quarterback Billy Vickers scored twice in a 40-28 Hornet victory over Berkmar Friday night.

The 2009 season opener for both teams saw Aiken take control early and never falter. Aiken scored on its first possession, using five different ball carriers to cover 64 yards in seven plays for an early lead.

Johnon's 71-yard touchdown run gave the Hornets a two-score lead in the second quarter. Another Vickers score, a Cedric Wise 55-yard touchdown scamper, and a Marquiez Garvin 35-yard run added up for a 20-point third quarter.

Johnson scored again from five yards out in the fourth quarter.

The Aiken defense had a shutout going with three minutes left in the third quarter, but Berkmar scored four times in the final 14 minutes.
