Columbia County's recent rains dump over 6.5 inches of water

Columbia County’s weekend rainfall totaled 2.97 inches, capping one of the wettest weeks of the year.

Portions of the county were still drying out from a massive 3.6-inch rainfall the night of Aug. 12-13, and the weekend weather system’s contributions brought the total this month to more than 6.57 inches.

By comparison, the Augusta area received just 3.29 inches for the entire month of July, and far less August rainfall than its neighboring county.

Pam Tucker, Columbia County’s Emergency Services director, said rainfall in Martinez and Evans area is measured through a certified gauge at a residence in Walnut Hill subdivision in Evans.

By comparison, the National Weather Service measures precipitation from its gauges at Augusta Regional Airport, where very little rain has been recorded during the month. Those measurements showed a total of just 1.53 inches.
