SAVANNAH -- A $3,500 bond was set Monday for the son of a Savannah-Chatham Metro police officer accused of stealing his father's patrol car and wrecking it early Saturday.
Patrick Goodberry Jr., 18, is charged with theft by taking the auto, driving under the influence and striking a fixed object.
Police reports indicate Goodberry's father, Cpl. Patrick Goodberry, immediately notified the department when he discovered his marked Metro police car was missing from his home.
Goodberry is assigned to the patrol division, department spokesman Gene Harley said.
When officers arrived at Goodberry's house, they were told Goodberry Jr. had taken the vehicle without permission.
The vehicle was later recovered at White Bluff Road and Paradise Drive with damage to the tires, windshield and front bumper, police said.
The intoxicated defendant was found walking near the damaged auto, police said. He was taken to the Chatham County jail where he was arraigned Monday afternoon.
Chatham County Recorder's Court Judge Tammy Stokes scheduled a preliminary hearing for Aug. 17.
