Tonya Cogle knows first-hand the role parental involvement plays in a childs education.
Its important for parents to get involved in their childrens education and for the child to see them participating in the process, said Ms. Cogle, who is a parent, a Hephzibah Elementary School teacher and president of the schools Parent Teacher Association.
Studies show that when parents are involved in the school, student achievement increases. With so many things going on in the schools, there are plenty of opportunities for parents to get involved.
Ms. Cogle was among many PTA representatives who distributed information about the organization and their schools during the Community Wide PTA event Saturday at Augusta State University Sports Complex.
More than 900 people attended the second-year event .
Among them were Alyssa Brinson and her husband, Alexander, who both signed up to join the PTA at their childrens schools C.T. Walker Traditional Magnet and Sue Reynolds Elementary.
As a parent, if youre not involved, then your child is less likely to be enthused about school. If they arent enthused, they arent going to do well, Mrs. Brinson said. Their success starts with you. Thats why we felt it was important to get involved.
Other organizations such as Taking Back the Streets and Dads in Action were present as well.
Growing up, I had men role models who helped raise me and mentor me. They were there to help push me along in life, said Renaldo Woolfolk , member of Dads in Action and president of the Copeland Elementary Schools PTA. Its even more important now in todays time for men to get involved. We can make a huge difference just by going into our schools and taking an active role.
Barbara Seigler, president of the Richmond County Council of PTAs, was pleased with the turnout.
Everyone took away useful information and learned about what our PTAs have planned for this year. Some also signed up to join or to volunteer, she said. Getting more people involved is an exciting way to start the school year.
