9-year-old girl hit by car dies

A 9-year-old Aiken girl hit by a car while trying to cross a street Friday night has died.

Shakayla Watkins was pronounced dead at Medical College of Georgia. She died from multiple body trauma, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Shakayla was returning from a football scrimmage at Aiken High School with her sister and other friends when she attempted to cross Laurens Street in Aiken, according to authorities. She was struck by a 1997 Ford that was traveling north on Laurens. The accident happened at 8:32 pm. No one else was injured.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office are investigating the incident. There are no charges pending against the driver of the vehicle, according to a coroner’s office release.
