Greenville man dies in fire, wife airlifted to burn center

A 45-year-old South Carolina man died after being pulled from a burning home, and his wife was flown to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital, according to authorities.

Larry Douglas Painter died about 7:15 a.m. Saturday.

Deputy Coroner Kent Dill said Painter died at a hospital about an hour after firefighters rescued him and his wife from their Greenville mobile home. Frances Annette Thomason was airlifted to the Augusta burn center, where she was in critical condition today, according to a spokeswoman.

Officials say the couple's 16-year-old son escaped the flames after pushing an air conditioning unit out of his window.

Dill says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
