Local residents can save 20 percent or more on their prescriptions with a new prescription drug discount card.
The FamilyWize Prescription Drug Program is available through a partnership between the United Way and Augusta-Richmond County to assist with rising prescription costs.
The free card is available to anyone, regardless of age, income or how often he or she fills prescriptions. Recipients can receive the card if they dont have health insurance or require medicine that is not covered by their insurance plan, said LaVerne Gold, the president and CEO of United Way of the CSRA.
Health costs are one of the highest increases in cost known to families and individuals, as well as employers, Ms. Gold said. About 90 percent of existing pharmacies are participating in this program. We hope to see $100 million in savings in the next couple of years. Its a win-win not only for the employer, but for the individual and pharmacy as well.
There is no application fee, joining fee or personal data that is collected for the FamilyWize program. Already, the program has distributed 10,000 cards in the local area, she said.
Those interested can visit www.FamilyWize.org to print a card, research drug prices or find a list of participating pharmacies. They can also call the United Way or the 2-1-1 information call center. Local businesses and employers can receive cards for all of their employees, Ms. Gold said.
The United Way of the CSRA has joined more than 800 United Ways nationwide to save people over $50 million in the next year on the cost of their medicine.
The savings on the cost of the medicine is provided voluntarily by more than 55,000 participating pharmacies that have agreed to accept prices for medications that are close to the prices they make available to large insurance companies, according to a release.
