UPDATED: Motorcyclist killed in morning accident on I-20

A motorcyclist was killed this morning after colliding with another vehicle on Interstate 20 near the Belair Road exit in Columbia County, according to the county coroner.

Larry Thomas White, 61, of the 600 block of Honeysuckle Road in Gainesville, Ga., was pronounced dead at the scene at about 9:45 a.m., said Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins.

The accident occurred near the exit 194 overpass on I-20 at about 9 a.m., Mr. Collins said.

Mr. White was driving a 2006 Harley Davidson bike and failed to see slow-moving traffic ahead in a construction zone, said Columbia County sheriff’s Sgt. A.J. Lyons. Mr. White braked and slid into the rear end of a Nissan Frontier, Sgt. Lyons said. Mr. White was thrown from the bike, causing his body to hit the back of a car, he said.

“I just don’t think he saw what was happening in time,” Sgt. Lyons said.

Mr. White died of blunt force trauma to the head, Mr. Collins said. No one else was injured.

The wreck temporarily halted traffic on I-20.
