Severe thunderstorm watch

Rain, hail and gusty winds could be developing in the Augusta area this afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for all of South Carolina and Richmond, Burke, Columbia and McDuffie counties until 11 p.m., said Tony Petrolito, meteorologist with the weather service in West Columbia.

Scattered thunderstorms are forming in South Carolina and northern Georgia this afternoon, which could mean large hail, wind gusts of up to 70 mph and thunderstorms for the Augusta area by tonight, Mr. Petrolito said.
