Sports: Spurrier could get bonus

COLUMBIA – South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman has received a five-year contract extension.

The university’s board of trustees Friday also approved an amendment that would allow football coach Steve Spurrier to earn up to an additional $100,000 if his players reach certain academic levels.

The university’s Board of Trustees approved both moves. Hyman had one year left on his contract. The move keeps him in charge of Gamecock athletics through June 30, 2015.

Hyman did not receive a raise on his deal, which guarantees him $430,000 a year. Hyman and university president Harris Pastides both cited the troubled economic climate for holding off on a raise.

Spurrier could make anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 should the football team reach at least 925 on the NCAA’s Academic Progress Report.
